Founded by two longtime members of the water community who continue to serve as strategic advisors, SmartCover was formed to provide real-time, continuous sewer monitoring to eliminate sewer spills, optimize maintenance, detect storm water inflow and infiltration, and prioritize and optimize capital repairs.
SmartCover’s leadership team consists of professionals with experience spanning astrophysics, economics, engineering, software development, system integration, sensor technology, finance, wastewater operations, sales, customer service, and marketing.
Corey Williams joined SmartCover© as President and CEO in 2021. He is the leading force behind our team of professionals, which implements a suite of technology solutions that serve collection systems across North America. Along with his leadership abilities, he brings a strategic sense for industry innovation and investment due to a unique combination of civil engineering, software acumen, and sales experience with water and wastewater utilities from around the globe.
Prior to joining SmartCover©, Corey was President and CEO at Optimatics, a software company backed by SUEZ Group, the French multinational corporation. During his tenure, the company recognized significant accelerated growth, saw the globalization of SAAS sales, and received two rounds of venture funding. As part of the senior management team at Inflection Point Solutions, he was instrumental in several acquisitions and maintains a role with the IPS portfolio of companies. He also spent over a decade with Black & Veatch, where he led the IT consulting practice and earned numerous performance awards.
In addition to his role at SmartCover©, he is the Co-Founder and moderator of the Water and Wastewater CIO and CFO Forums, with membership representing the top IT/OT and financial professionals from the largest U.S. water and wastewater utilities. He has authored more than 75 professional papers and articles in industry publications. Corey earned his B.S. in Engineering and Civil Engineering from Kansas State University. He resides in Kansas City, MO with his family.
David Rees serves as Chief Technology Officer of SmartCover©. He has over two decades of experience in the world of software development and engineering, with a focus on real-time online transaction processing, system architecture, and user interface design and implementation. He first began working with SmartCover© as a consultant in 2008 and joined the company full time in 2014.
David has worked for companies and organizations such as Sportech, eBet Technologies, SAIC, and EarthKAM. In these positions, he led teams responsible for 24/7 online operations, maintained high availability and performance under demanding customer loads while meeting performance requirements, minimized downtime, and managed customer relations. He oversees the engineering department and actively supports all facets of product quality and value engineering, software development, user interface, systems engineering, and management.
A focus on continuous improvement on all engineering aspects results in improved processes and improved products with the highest efficiency and reliability. David earned his B.S. in Computer Science from University of California San Diego. He serves on the Board of the San Dieguito Youth Softball League and enjoys coaching his children’s softball and baseball teams.
James Crabtree is a senior finance executive with over 20 years of experience in project development and corporate management in the water, power, and environmental industries. He has led over $1.5B in direct investments in a variety of projects and companies.
Jim has held various senior management positions, including Managing Director of a $170 million private equity fund and Vice President in G.E. Capital’s Structured Finance Group, as well as in JP Morgan Chase’s Global Structured Finance and U.S. Multinational Advisory Group. In addition to his transaction experience, Jim is skilled in business development and strategic planning. Jim has an M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.
Ron Toten is an experienced leader in all aspects of operations and technology management. He has been acknowledged for combining business acumen and technology to develop and execute strategic business plans to improve the bottom line. Ron is a strong, versatile communicator with a solid work ethic and positive energy who leads the way toward building effective, world-class organizations. Ron is responsible for overseeing SmartCover© installations across North America.
As a seasoned leader, his combination of engineering, technology, project management, and customer service is unparalleled. He easily integrates with operations and is accessible to crews in the field to ensure the highest standards are met and the results are optimized—regardless of which of our applications (blockages, high frequency cleaning, inflow and infiltration, or H2S) the solution is targeting. Ron oversees the field testing of our research and development projects and masterfully manages the intricacies of resource allocation, logistics, and traffic management.
Prior to SmartCover©, Ron has served in various leadership roles within the IT industry—as a CTO for a software development company and a management consultant—providing strategic direction to enhance profitability, productivity, and efficiency. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Davis. When he’s not hitting the little white ball, you can find Ron wrestling with his grandsons. Ron is based out of Orange County, CA.
Paris is our Vice President of Sales. He is an experienced leader with more than 25 years in the industry with the last two decades focused on the municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment markets. He oversees and manages our global sales operation with a network of regional managers and channel partners across North America.
Accountable for driving and accelerating growth for the company, he focuses on strategic planning and developing the market for our innovative solutions. He works with end users to identify new applications and lends his engineering and technical expertise to our R&D team to support the development and commercialization of new solutions.
Prior to joining SmartCover©, Paris was VP of Sales at Axine Water Technologies, where he led and built their commercial organization. He previously spent 14 years in various leadership roles at USP Technologies (Danaher subsidiary)—an environmental services company—and 5 years at Infilco Degremont (SUEZ subsidiary). Paris earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He is an innovator and inventor holding two patents, and he has authored and presented many technical papers throughout his career. He currently resides outside Richmond, VA.
John Marciszewski — Vice President of Business Development
John Marciszewski is SmartCover©’s Vice President of Business Development, bringing over 25 years of commercialization experience in high-tech industries, spanning water, telecom, semiconductor, and renewable energy. He is responsible for strategic growth, with a focus on Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs), and large municipalities.
John’s goal is to help wastewater utilities pilot and scale innovative practices for collection system management, promoting capital efficiency, system resiliency, and environmental protection. He is also tasked with managing key technology partnerships that add value through expanded service offerings. For the past 10 years, John was Director of Business Development at Mueller Water Products, where he was instrumental in the exponential growth of Echologics’ acoustic pipeline management offerings. His current areas of interest include utility asset management, regulatory frameworks, water system valuation, and cloud-based monitoring systems.
John has been an Industrial Advisory Board member for both the Sustainable Water Infrastructure Management (SWIM) Center at Virginia Tech and the Financial Research Institute. He earned a Master of Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University. John enjoys golfing, freshwater fishing, progressive rock, pizzas on the grill, and red European varietals. He currently resides on the New Jersey shore with his family.
