Capital Planning: City of Aurora
BACKGROUND
Aurora is Colorado’s third largest city, with more than 380,000 residents. The Aurora Water Department (AWD) operates and maintains the city’s sanitary sewer and stormwater drainage systems. With accelerating population and construction growth, concerns about sewer system capacity, the cost of capital improvements, environmental sustainability and workplace safety prompted AWD officials to begin strategically preparing for the future.
SUMMARY
The city of Aurora has 10 SmartCover units that are frequently moved throughout the collection system to monitor different locations for inflow and infiltration (I&I) and to collect detailed data. Accessing more detailed data has helped Aurora Water reduce costs and provided more flexibility in overall operations planning, especially when scheduling cleanings. The data also is used for trend analysis and for reporting.
Response times have improved and staff have safer field change-over conditions by eliminating unnecessary confined entry inspections.
