I&I Management: City of Green Bay

  • Green Bay, WI

  • Inflow & Infiltration

  • Midwest Region

BACKGROUND

Green Bay is the third largest city in Wisconsin and is known as “Titletown USA” because it is home to the National Football League’s Green Bay Packers. Approximately 106,000 people reside within the city limits.

The Green Bay Sewer Division operates and maintains the sanitary sewer and stormwater collection systems, consisting of 465 miles of sanitary pipe and 408 miles of storm pipes, 13 pump stations, and more than 9,000 manholes. The city’s wastewater is treated by the independent Green Bay Metropolitan Sewage District (GBMSD).

SUMMARY

Green Bay’s sewer operations have been transformed by SmartCover’s real-time sewer-monitoring technology. Green Bay currently surveils its system with 14 SmartFLOE™ monitors, SmartRain™, a Canal monitor and StreamWatch®.

By monitoring the rapid rise and fall of the East River, combined with data from the Fox River, Green Bay can correlate level changes in the rivers with storm water infiltration into the collection system. The ability to aggregate and analyze data from the SmartCover systems is helping Green Bay more clearly understand the dynamic relationship between upstream flows and downstream infiltration impacts, prepare for water surges, and improve resource allocation.
