Real-Time Sewer-Monitoring & Data Help Optimize Operations

  • DuPage County, IL
  • Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO), O&M Cost Reduction
  • Midwest Region

BACKGROUND

The DuPage County Wastewater Division (DCWW) serves more than 200,000 residents in parts of Illinois’ second most populous county, located in that state’s Northeastern region. The wastewater collection system includes 500 miles of sewer lines, 9 lift stations, more than 7,000 manholes, and three wastewater treatment facilities, which combined can treat 22.5 million gallons per day (MGD).

SUMMARY

Smartcover’s real-time sewer-monitoring technology is helping DCWW make better-informed decisions to optimize its operations, preserving time, money and other resources. Overall, the monitors are providing around-the-clock improved visualization of site conditions. That has led to more proactive versus reactive maintenance, helped identify and addressing I&I issues and reduced SSOs. DCWW also has addressed staff safety, public health and infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
