Reduced Lift Station Backups: Richland County Utilities
BACKGROUND
Richland County is the second-most populous county in South Carolina, with more than 400,000 residents and rapidly growing. The state capital of Columbia is located there along with four other communities.
Richland County Utilities (RCU) serves the unincorporated areas of Richland County with water and sanitary sewer service. RCU’s water distribution system includes two water tanks, one holds up to 300,000 gallons and the other up to 800,000 gallons and three water well pump stations. On the wastewater side, the utility has 330 miles of sewer lines, 61 pump stations, and two wastewater treatment facilities, which treat a combined 2 million gallons of wastewater per day.
SUMMARY
The return on investment has been realized in several ways, including by cost savings through better resource management. RCU’s ability to remotely identify pump issues has helped crews quickly reverse down times and decrease repair costs. RCU can promptly address arising issues, purposely schedule maintenance, safeguard workers, and create accurate reports for regulatory compliance and for capital improvement planning.
