BACKGROUND

Prince William Water (PWW) is a leading regional water and wastewater utility, serving more than 98,000 customers in the ever-growing northern part of Virginia, along the Potomac River. Prince William County is Virginia’s second most populous county, with more than 480,000 residents.

PWW oversees a massive infrastructure for drinking water and wastewater collection. In its wastewater collection network, there are 1,200 miles of gravity and pressurized sewer mains, more than 65 sewage lift stations, and a wastewater treatment facility.
The H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility (AWRF) handles up to 43 million gallons of wastewater a day (MGD).

Part of PWW’s mission is being a model environmental steward and safeguarding ecosystems of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay watersheds. That means meeting Federal Clean Water Act standards, fulfilling Environment Protection Agency requirements and adhering to state water quality regulations, including the Occoquan (Watershed) Policy, Chesapeake Bay water quality standards, and the Virginia Sewage Collection and Treatment Regulations (SCAT).

SUMMARY

PWW proactively focused its efforts on preventing SSOs, reducing I&I, improving response time, and effectively scheduling preventative maintenance through the deployment of smart sewer technology in conjunction with a fully integrated CMOM program. Since deploying smart sewer technology, PWW has consistently been among the top-performing public sewer agencies in the country, averaging two or fewer SSOs per year for each 1,000 miles of sewer mains.

The shift to smart technology has broadened PPW’s ability to better assess overall system conditions. Data informed a major $131.7 million sewer system upgrade in 2010. Data from the 39 SmartCover applications continues to inform decision-making for operations management and capital improvement projects. PWW’s on-call teams can quickly respond to address an alarm, knowing more about the situation because of the information provided by the solutions working together.
