BACKGROUND

Richland County is the second-most populous county in South Carolina, with more than 400,000 residents and rapidly growing. The state capital of Columbia is located there along with four other communities.

Richland County Utilities (RCU) serves the unincorporated areas of Richland County with water and sanitary sewer service. RCU’s water distribution system includes two water tanks—one that holds up to 300,000 gallons and another that holds up to 800,000 gallons—and three water well pump stations. On the wastewater side, the utility has 330 miles of sewer lines, 61 pump stations, and two wastewater treatment facilities, which treat a combined 2 million gallons of wastewater per day.

SUMMARY

RCU acquired Data Flow Systems Telemetry Control Units (TCUs) to optimize its pump station operations and to improve overall standard operating procedures. The TCU technology uses hardware and software to remotely monitor and control the pumps.

Since 2019, RCU has been able to track real-time changes within its water distribution system. Then, in 2020 RCU expanded the use of TCU technology to monitor the wastewater pump stations.
