I&I Tracking: City of Little Falls
BACKGROUND
Near the center of Minnesota sits the City of Little Falls with a population of more than 9,100 residents. It is the childhood home of renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh, who lived there long before the ‘s sewer system was built in 1958.
The city’s Wastewater Division of the Public Works Department operates the wastewater treatment facility, which processes 2 million gallons of wastewater per day and maintains more than 80 miles of gravity sewer lines and 19 lift stations. The Public Works Department also is responsible for the city’s drinking water system, including water treatment plant and distribution network.
SUMMARY
Through the innovative use of SmartCover technology, Little Falls has quickly gained a broader understanding of key issues across all sections of the city’s sewer collection system, including sewer flow conditions, water table diversity, and seasonal variations. Monthly SmartInsights reports automatically deliver a summary of the collection system’s performance, including the number of potential spills that were averted and a comparison to the previous month. SmartInsights also provides takeaways for the SmartFLOE and H2S applications, informing the operations staff where flow was the highest during the month and how many H2S sensors exceeded their high alarm threshold.
Leveraging real-time monitoring and rich data analytics, the city’s Wastewater Division staff has been able to address I&I challenges, avoid spills and optimize operations and management at reduced costs. Over the longer term, it is anticipated that additional payback will come in the form of improved planning and better-informed decisions on capital investments.
SmartInsights™ are monthly summary report of the overall system performance
